ZOE International is very excited that we are now launching a work in Mexico. We will continue to fulfill our global mission to “rescue every child” in Mexico. Mexico, like most nations has a child trafficking problem. It is a Tier 2 nation according to the US Trafficking in Persons Report for 2016. Tier 2 nations are not the worst offenders but they have not fully implemented working solutions yet.
In 2012, Mexico implemented a comprehensive federal anti-trafficking law. Many of the states have also incorporated anti-trafficking regulations. In Mexico City, they have begun to train hotel staff how to look for signs of human trafficking. This all points toward a growing effort on the part of Mexico to combat human slavery.
The victims mostly trafficked are women and children through force, fraud, and coercion. Mexico is a source country for other nations like the USA. It is also a destination country with sex trafficking in many cities and parts of Mexico. Many Central and South Americans are trafficked into Mexico or trafficked through Mexico to the USA, making it a transit country as well.
Labor trafficking for men, women, and children is another problem. These slaves are held in “debt bondage” that they cannot pay back. ZOE Mexico will begin its work with Child Trafficking Prevention. Our goal is to spread awareness of child trafficking first. Most people in Mexico are largely unaware of the scope of child slavery around them. Then we will expand into Rescue, and Restoration of child victims.
CHRISTIANITY IN MEXICO
We will also continue our global mission to “reach every person” with the Gospel. Mexico is one of the least evangelized nations in Latin America. Though it is considered a Catholic country, most of the citizens do not have a vibrant faith in Jesus. Amidst this spiritual climate, there is a small emerging church that is strong and alive. ZOE Mexico will begin to reach the unreached with the Gospel, disciple new believers, and raise up Christian national leaders alongside the Church of Mexico.
